The Šibenik archipelago comprises 249 islands, islets, and reefs scattered across 350 square kilometres of the central Adriatic, the second-largest cluster in Croatia after the Kornati chain.
Most remain uninhabited limestone outcrops shaped by karst erosion over 65 million years, their white cliffs rising vertically from water that reaches 40 metres deep within a boat length of shore. The region was a contested naval frontier under Venice, the Ottoman Empire, and Austria-Hungary between the 15th and 20th centuries, and fortifications still crown the larger islands. Šibenik itself served as the Venetian Republic's easternmost Adriatic stronghold from 1412 until Napoleon's dissolution of the state in 1797.
Evening boat departures from Šibenik Riva exploit the archipelago's westward orientation and sheltered channels. Between May and September, the Adriatic experiences a predictable diurnal wind cycle: the maestral blows from the northwest during daylight hours, then drops to near-calm after 18:00 as thermal gradients equalize. Sea surface temperatures peak at 25–27°C in late summer, and visibility averages 30 metres. The golden hour before sunset—roughly 19:00 to 20:30 in midsummer, 17:30 to 19:00 by late September—produces oblique light that saturates the ochre and rust tones of Šibenik's old town while casting long shadows across island ridges.
Most Šibenik sunset boat tour itineraries follow a northern arc through the Šibenik channel toward Prvić, Zlarin, and the outer Kornati perimeter, a 12 to 18 nautical mile loop completed in two to three hours. Prvić, two kilometres offshore, hosts two medieval villages and the tomb of inventor Faust Vrančić, whose 1595 treatise Machinae Novae documented the first known parachute design. Zlarin is car-free and historically supplied coral to Venetian jewellers; its harbour remains ringed by stone drying platforms once used for sponge harvests. The boat route typically includes a swimming stop at one of the secluded coves on Kaprije or in the Blue Lagoon near Drvenik Veli, where submerged tufa shelves create shallow turquoise pools.
The archipelago's ecological status shifted in 2023 when the Croatian government extended the boundaries of Kornati National Park eastward to include the outer Šibenik islands, tightening anchoring regulations and introducing seasonal quotas for commercial vessels. Evening tours operating under the new permit framework limit passenger counts to 12 per boat and prohibit amplified music after 20:00 to preserve nesting habitats for Scopoli's shearwater, a seabird that returns to island burrows at dusk.
